Most homes need some radiator work when they switch to a heat pump. Heat pumps run cooler, so the radiators often need more surface area to do the same job.

Looking at what is actually charged out there, a single upgraded radiator usually costs £200–£550 fitted. Doing three to six rooms commonly lands between £800 and £2,400. A full house can go higher.

Why radiators matter with heat pumps

Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures (typically 35–55 °C) than a traditional gas boiler. A radiator that was fine at the higher temperature delivers less heat at the lower temperature. In many cases this means the surface area needs to increase — either by fitting a larger or deeper radiator in the same position, or by adding a second emitter in the room.

Not every home needs a full swap. Modern double-panel radiators in a reasonably insulated property often need only minor attention, or none. Older single-panel radiators or large open-plan rooms more often need upsizing. Underfloor heating on the ground floor usually removes the need for radiator upgrades on that floor entirely.

How “Few / Many / Full” maps

  • Few / suitable / UFH path → £0
    Existing emitters already adequate, only one or two rooms need attention, or the heating is primarily underfloor.
  • Many → +£750–£1,250
    Typical partial upgrade covering several rooms (commonly three to six radiators). This is the most frequent real-world outcome on older South West properties and sits inside the public £800–£2,400 range for that scope.
  • Full → +£1,500–£2,500
    Most or all emitters need upsizing. Still within the lower-to-mid public full-house ranges. Deliberately not pushed to the highest possible premium replacement cost so the overall planning band remains useful.

The uplifts are planning figures, not fixed quotes. They are based on the lower-to-mid public ranges so the overall heat-pump cost band remains a reliable early guide rather than a worst-case scare.

Actual installer quotes after a proper heat-loss survey will refine the exact rooms and cost. Some homes will come in lower (or at zero). A few complex period properties will come in higher. The calculator keeps the allowance conservative and realistic so the total band stays honest and useful for planning.

South West notes

Older solid-wall or small-bore properties common in Devon and Cornwall more often sit in the “many” category, especially where living rooms or larger spaces have single-panel radiators. New builds, recent renovations with generous emitters, or homes that already have underfloor heating more often sit at the £0 uplift. Access and pipework constraints in terraces or village properties can also push a job toward the higher end once the survey is done.
